John C. Demas is an attorney with Goode Hemme & Barger, APC in San Diego, California. His practice areas include real estate, estate planning, tax, title insurance and other transactional business matters. Additionally, he is a full-time Clinical Professor with the Burnham-Moores Center for Real Estate at the University of San Diego’s School of Business.
Mr. Demas started his career in Hotel Management with Westin Hotels & Resorts, with positions culminating in managing an accounting department as Assistant Controller with Camino Real Hotels of Mexico. He has extensive experience in accounting and the analysis of financial statements, and has completed comprehensive due diligence in preparation of a roll-up merger and securities offering.
After law school, Mr. Demas joined Chicago Title Company where he served as an Escrow Officer for hundreds of commercial closings and Exchange Officer for thousands of IRC §1031 exchanges. He was recruited to join Stewart Title Company as their Commercial Escrow Manager. He also reviewed legal forms and requirements for a novel real property conversion involving the conversion of a mobile home park into a condominium. He has also been a designated expert witness for escrow related litigation matters.
Mr. Demas joined the faculty of the University of San Diego in 2004 where he is thrilled to open student minds and doors to the joys and pitfalls of our legal system. Additionally, Mr. Demas has presented for the National Business Institute, the State Bar of California and numerous other speaking opportunities in conjunction with his faculty position with the University of San Diego. He has also taught real estate and escrow courses with Southwestern College and City College.

Education & Background
Mr. Demas received his B.S. in Political Science from California State University, Fullerton in 1991, his Master’s in Business Administration from New Mexico State University in 1994, and his Juris Doctor from the University of Denver College of Law in 1998, and an LL.M. in Taxation from the University of San Diego in 2013.
John is admitted to practice in California (1999), Colorado (2002), the United States Supreme Court, United States Tax Court, Court of Federal Claims and the United States Court of Appeals for the Federal Circuit. He is also admitted to practice in each federal jurisdiction in California and Colorado as well as before the United States Court of Appeals for the 9th Circuit and 10th Circuit. He remains a member in good standing in each of these jurisdictions.
