Kaplan is Of Counsel to the firm. His previous positions before
moving to San Diego in 1993 include vice president and general counsel
of major international companies in the finance and mining industries,
and partner in a US international law firm with offices in New York
and London specializing in corporate, financial and tax law. Before
he entered law practice, Mr. Kaplan was a Foreign Service Officer
with the State Department, with assignments representing US interests
at our embassies in Senegal, Mauritania and Belgium. In Washington,
DC he advised on negotiating international agreements for world
trade in agricultural commodities. As a corporate lawyer, Mr. Kaplan
takes special pride in the “real world” entrepreneurial
experience he gained as originator, co-founder and general counsel
of a start-up business venture that went public three years after
launch with a market capitalization of over $100 million. Mr. Kaplan
is dedicated to serving his clients, small or large, whether in
new ventures or major corporate transactions. He is goal-oriented,
and skilled at deal structuring and finding creative solutions to
complex problems.
A
native of Chicago, Mr. Kaplan received his law degree and BA from
the University of Illinois, and continued his postgraduate legal
education at George Washington University and University College
London. He has written widely in leading newspapers and law journals
on international trade and financial matters, and is at present
Corporate Law columnist for the San Diego Daily Transcript. His
articles for the Transcript can be viewed online at www.sddt.com
in the Commentary section. Mr. Kaplan delights in the outdoor life
of San Diego, and on weekends you can usually find him playing tennis,
ocean kayaking or hiking in the backcountry with friends and family.
